My Fort Charlotte Photos

On Wednesday March 10th, 2010 my photojournalism class went to Fort Charlotte in Nassau, Bahamas.  We were told to go around and take pictures.  But of course I knew we'd be taking more than just pictures, we'd be using all the photojournalistic information we had acquired over the past eight weeks to take our pictures.

Here's what I got on my first shot!

This is my favorite picture.  I like the way I captured the wall. In this picture it doesn't even look like a wall to me, it looks like a wave.  I love the textures and smoothness of the wall, the colors and even the depth of the picture is okay for a first try.

For the following two pictures, I was trying to capture a certain angle.  I wanted to show depth by making the light a major focus of the picture but also I wanted to show the length and curve of Fort Charlotte.

For this picture I was actually standing very high up from this barricade.  I used the zoom feature on my camera and was able to take this shot.  My focus of the picture was really the NO ENTRY sign.

I was experimenting with parallel lines in this picture with the power lines and then the horizon of the sea, the edge of the wall and the two drain lines on the wall.  They all go in the same direction and that's what I was trying to capture.

I wanted to show distance in this picture.  I think it has a depth to it.  I'm not really sure as yet but I was definitely experimenting with showing distance.

For the next two pictures, I had to get really low, down and dirty to get these shots.  I like the natural lighting in the first picture.  Also, this part of the structure is actually very small but I wanted to make it appear larger than it actually it is as seen in picture two.

I wanted to capture not only the structure but also the tourists.  Fort Charlotte is one of the many tourist attractions in Nassau therefore, I wanted to show tourists coming to this spot to enjoy and learn the history of the fort.  The cracks and age in the structure shows that it's been around for a very long time.

I was trying to show repetition with with the lights and also I wanted to show the depth of field.

I know I still have soooo much to learn but I think I did pretty well for my first try at photojournalistic picture-taking.

WEEK EIGHT, DAY 5: A MAN-SIZED STREET CONE?

I really love the angle of this picture.  It really makes me see photography in a very creative and inspiring way.  This photographer was able to make a street cone, which is probably less than half the size of the police officer, appear to be the same height.  It's a very stunning and ingenious angle because it shows that the cones, which are used to warn cars of something, are just as important as the police officer.

WEEK EIGHT, DAY 4: TYLER PERRY IN THE BAHAMAS!

This is why I love photojournalism.  I never even knew that Tyler Perry, a reknowned director, producer and actor of Madea and other sensational black films was in the Bahamas and is planning to use The Bahamas as a backdrop for the premiere of one of his movies, 'Why Did I Get Married'.

WEEK EIGHT, DAY 3: FROZEN FLUIDITY

I love the motion and balance in this photo. The expressions, the life and the energy these four girls are showing are as bright as the skirts they are wearing.  It's obvious they love dancing and performing.

WEEK EIGHT, DAY 2: PUTTING THE LAW IN FOCUS

This picture interested me because these students in California who were protesting about the rise in education fees are blurred whereas the officer in the back is clearer.  The focus has been put on the law.  The photographer who took this picture obviously wanted people to understand that even though many people are rioting there is still some measure of control over the situation.

WEEK EIGHT, DAY 1: SHE'S A HE?

What I like most about this picture is the focus and emphasis put on the man in the front.  Yes, it is a man! I was so shocked to read about the beauty pageant with Indian transgendered people.  The focus put on the man, really makes his feminine beauty stand out even more.

WEEK SEVEN, DAY FIVE: Dangerous Perspective

I really like the perspective of this shot.  This picture was of a recent bombing in Thailand.  What I see is a place that is still potentially dangerous for people to be near since there are pieces of the building precariously hanging.  This angle the picture was taken at gives a certain kind of depth and perspective to it.

WEEK SEVEN, DAY FOUR: Speechless

When I look at this picture I am stunned simply by the story of this girl named Keisha, a former COB student who committed suicide.  Looking at this picture doesn't show me a girl who was faced with deep inner turmoil.  It shows a girl who looked as if everything was fine but obviously it wasn't.  People please, suicide isn't the answer.  Please get help if you have thoughts of suicide or have even attempted to commit such an act.  Don't become another statistic.

WEEK SEVEN, DAY THREE: A Spectacular Vantage Point

This is a picture I can truly appreciate.  I love the vantage point that was captured and the roof is spectacular.  I've never seen a place like this and so the cameraman really caught my interest by focusing more on the surroundings instead of just the people.
